Benefits of having excellent credit

The two major credit measurements are VantageScore and FICO, which both use data from credit bureaus, but they calculate scores differently. An excellent credit score ranges from 800 to 850 on the FICO scale, while VantageScore’s excellent tier falls between 750 and 850. Despite their differences, if you have excellent credit, both FICO and VantageScore will generally reflect it.

With an excellent credit score, you'll have access to some of the most valuable and rewarding credit cards on the market, but the advantages aren’t limited to credit cards.

  • You can earn better rewards. Most credit cards that require an excellent credit score offer better rewards rates and broader spending categories than cards available with fair or average credit
  • You can access more exclusive perks. You’ll likely enjoy better travel incentives, protections and warranties, making their sometimes-high annual fees easier to offset.
  • You could have a higher credit limit. If you demonstrate you’re responsible with credit, issuers may feel comfortable offering you higher credit limits, increasing your spending power.
  • You could qualify for a lower APR. You have a better chance of getting the lowest APR available on a card when you have excellent credit (though we recommend always paying your statement balance in full each month to avoid interest).
  • Lenders may offer you more. Banks and lenders may be more willing to work with you and offer you more funding to cover large expenses like car loans, student loans and mortgages.
  • You’re deemed dependable. A trustworthy credit background could give you an advantage when you apply for housing, jobs, insurance, phone services and more.

Expert advice on cards for excellent credit

When you have excellent credit, so many credit card options become available that it might be difficult to narrow down your choices. When choosing a credit card, you should consider how it earns rewards on your spending, what cardholder perks it offers, how it complements any other cards you have (or might have), its list of transfer partners and if you’ll keep it beyond the first year. Make sure that whatever card you get will be useful to you beyond one-time credits, welcome offers and intro APR periods.

Determining what’s important to you will help you make the right choice, so it’ll be helpful to consider the following:

Maximizing your excellent credit

If you have excellent credit, give yourself a hand. It’s an outstanding achievement that can deliver much value over time. Now that you’re sitting on an excellent score, here are some tips from Bankrate credit card writers Ryan Flanigan and Brendan Dyer, who have credit scores above 800.

  • Credit Card

Keep up your positive credit habits

If you have excellent credit, odds are you’re already paying your credit card bills on time and in full and keeping your credit utilization low. Focus on maintaining your responsible use and long-term maintenance over short-term fluctuations, and you should be able to sustain your excellent score.

“If you’re building credit, it can help to minimize your card use, pay your balance as frequently as possible and make a habit out of checking your issuer’s apps or going online to view your account,” Dyer explains. “Even if you know you don’t have a balance, make monitoring your card, savings and checking accounts a part of your weekly routine because it will keep your finances at the forefront of your mind.”

  • Online

    Create a credit card strategy

Having excellent credit affords you access to some of the best credit cards on the market. Take this opportunity to develop a strategy to maximize returns on your most popular purchases and fill gaps in your earning strategy.

“Don't be afraid to add new cards, because even though you take a temporary hit to your credit, once you demonstrate responsible use, your score will go even higher than it was before you applied,” Flanigan explains.

Credit cards for excellent credit often offer some of the most valuable credit card perks available as well, so don’t forget to also maximize any new cards’ perks to make your strategy effective.

“Now that I have a credit score over 800, I can’t imagine losing access to the rewards rates and perks that I’ve been enjoying,” Dyer says. “I’m particularly grateful for the American Express Gold Card, which I didn’t apply for until I had excellent credit. Although its annual fee wasn't easy to stomach at first, after holding the card for nearly two years now, I couldn't be more pleased with it.”

  • Credit Card Balance Transfer

    Upgrade your credit cards

When you have excellent credit, your options for choice of great credit cards expands significantly. If you have any older credit cards that you opened when you had a lower credit score, call your issuer and inquire about upgrading any of those cards to their high-caliber counterparts.

However, do your research ahead of time to ensure that their upgraded versions are an even better fit for your needs. A card with a higher annual fee could be a money pit.

  • User

    Add an authorized user

Adding an authorized user to your credit cards for excellent credit serves two purposes. First, it can help build the credit score of the authorized user so long as you use the card responsibly. Secondly, some credit card perks may also be extended to the authorized user. Cards that offer Priority Pass Membership sometimes grant membership to authorized users.
