What’s a business credit card?

Business credit cards are revolving lines of credit that help cover short-term expenses and build business credit. Business credit cards work the same as consumer credit cards: If approved, you typically receive a specific credit limit, which serves as your spending maximum. Card issuers report your credit usage, good or bad, to credit bureaus, which can affect your credit score. Like consumer cards, business cards may also come with rewards, often in the form of cash back, points or miles.

The best business cards available often require good credit, but secured business credit cards exist as a way to help entrepreneurs get started building or rebuilding their business credit. Some cards may also earn rewards on eligible business-related spending and offer zero-interest intro APR periods.

Choosing the right business card depends on your specific business. One of the main factors to consider is the type of business card you need. A few of the most common types of business cards are:

  • Corporate credit cards: These cards are typically only issued to large businesses with established financial and credit histories. Banks will issue a corporate credit card to the business entity, not the individual business owners. One of the best examples is The Business Platinum Card® from American Express comes with a ton of benefits, including credits on Dell purchases and yearly Priority Pass Select membership.
  • Cash back credit cards: Cash back business cards can earn cash back rotating categories, fixed bonus categories or on all spending. These cards are a good option for any business that wants to earn rewards on their purchases. The Ink Business Preferred offers a good rewards rate on travel and select business categories, making it useful to many types of businesses.
  • Travel rewards credit cards: These cards offer a high rewards rate on various travel purchases, including car rentals, rideshares, hotel and flight bookings. This includes co-branded cards like The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card, which offers great rewards on both Hilton Hotel stays and commonly used business categories along with complimentary Gold Status
  • Charge cards: Some business cards are charge cards, which usually have no set credit line or spending limit. Instead, you pay off your full balance every month. The Capital One Spark Cash Plus is a great choice for business owners who prefer flat-rate cash back over tiered categories without a preset credit limit.

What is business credit?

A business credit score is a credit score that applies to businesses rather than individuals. Unlike personal credit scores, business credit scores can range from 1 to 100, depending on the credit bureau. Business scores are also public and attached to an Employer Identification Number (EIN) rather than a Social Security Number.

Building your business credit can be as easy as establishing credit with vendors and suppliers. However, not all lenders will report accounts to business credit bureaus, so double check that yours does. You can check your business credit score at the reporting agencies Dun & Bradstreet, Equifax and Experian. You may have to pay to see your score or look up other businesses.

Pros and cons of business credit cards

Business cards offer several advantages over personal cards when initially funding a business, though you should keep a few potential drawbacks in mind.

Pros

  • Checkmark

Working capital: A business credit card can help address short-term financing needs.

  • Checkmark

Lenient qualification: It can be easier to qualify for a business credit card than a business loan or line of credit.

  • Checkmark

Credit limits: Business credit cards usually provide higher credit limits than consumer credit cards.

  • Checkmark

Available to sole proprietors: They’re available to the self-employed, like freelancers, independent contractors and gig workers.

  • Checkmark

Separates business expenses: Business credit cards help track and manage your company's expenses for budgeting and tax purposes.

  • Checkmark

Lower APR: Business cards often come with lower interest rates than personal credit cards.

Cons

  • High credit requirements: While secured business credit cards exist, the choices available for businesses with fair or poor credit are slim.

  • Liability: You may be personally liable for any unpaid debt on the cards, and business credit can affect your personal credit.

  • Fewer protections: Business credit cards aren’t required to offer the same consumer protections as personal cards under the Credit CARD Act of 2009, though many issuers do voluntarily extend these protections to their business products.

Tips on choosing the best business card for you

Choosing the right business credit card depends on your business needs. After evaluating your present needs and future goals, follow these steps to get the best card for you.

Our data: Business credit card approvals in 2023

Understanding how approval rates fluctuate may help you better plan when to apply for a business credit card. We analyzed approvals for business credit cards that readers applied for through Bankrate in 2023.

According to our proprietary data, business credit card approvals on Bankrate were the lowest in January 2023. But approvals increased throughout the year, spiking in October 2023 to rates 83 percent higher than in January before slightly tapering off through the end of December.

Business credit card approvals could spike in October for various reasons. One possibility is less access to business loans. Banks reported tighter standards and weaker interest in commercial and industrial loans in Q4 2023, which could push businesses to seek other funding products, like credit cards.

For example, Bank of America’s 2023 Women & Minority Business Owner Spotlight revealed that 54 percent of business owners who said they planned to use funding in the next 12 months picked business credit cards as their top choice. And business credit bureau Dun & Bradstreet reported an increase in its U.S. Small Business Health Index in September and October 2023, which could contribute to more credit card approvals.

While seasonal trends may affect your business throughout the year, it’s not uncommon to use some form of business funding to manage cash flow. What’s important is finding the right combination of tools and strategies to grow your business. Learn more about small-business funding with Bankrate’s small-business articles.

Expert advice for maximizing business credit cards

Like with consumer credit cards, you want to have a clear vision for how your business credit card can help you achieve your financial or business goals. Here are a few tips to get you started:

  • Use your card to build business credit: Business credit cards are one of the most cost-effective ways to build business credit. As long as you take advantage of the card’s grace period and pay your balance in full each month, you can avoid interest charges.
  • Consider having more than one business credit card: For many entrepreneurs, one business credit card won’t be enough. To maximize your credit card rewards, you might need two or three business cards, each with different bonus rewards categories that match your spending habits.
  • Have a plan for paying your balance: If you can’t pay your business credit card in full each month, interest charges can eat away at your rewards and make it harder to pay off that balance. Plus, if you signed a personal guarantee, you’re personally liable for repaying the debt if your business can’t. Have a plan in place to pay off your balances before you start using a business credit card.

Bankrate’s take: Though uncommon, business cards that do not require a personal guarantee do exist. However, there’s usually a tradeoff. Instead of providing a personal guarantee, you'll usually need to link a corporate bank account with a large balance, provide proof of significant business profits or offer business assets as collateral.

How one Bankrate expert uses his business credit cards

Bankrate writer Ryan Flanigan explains his approach to choosing business cards and how he uses them in this overall credit card strategy.

“I like business cards because they can do the heavy lifting for me. When I have significant business spending, I know my personal credit won't take a hit and I'll earn solid rewards. I've been able to keep my credit score in a good place even when I have a large balance to deal with on my business cards. It's also very helpful for keeping everything separate and organized once tax season rolls around.

When I'm looking for business cards, I want to see how they work together with other cards I have. For instance, the Amex Business Platinum, Business Gold and Blue Business Plus cards make an amazing team, covering almost every need I have. Also, the Chase business cards can all pool points together, which can make for an excellent points-generating machine. Every card does its job by covering something different. Like in business, when cards work together for me, it makes a great partnership.”

In the news: Rates hold steady in 2024

Following its June 11-12 meeting, the Federal Reserve announced that they will leave interest rates untouched

Bankrate chief financial analyst’s Brian McBride, CFA, says that it may be a while before we see a cut in rates. “We need to go on a winning streak of seeing inflation trend down over multiple months before the Fed will feel comfortable enough to begin cutting interest rates,” says McBride.

Considering this, it is best for small-businesses owners to focus on current credit card rates and look out for 0 percent introductory offers on their business cards.

With no interest rate relief in sight, business credit cardholders should be cautious. If you carry a balance on your card, take advantage of business credit cards that offer a promotional APR. During an intro APR period this time, you can often minimize interest charges for 12 months or more depending on the offer. You may also be able to take advantage of SBA loans, which are guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. These government-backed loans cap interest rates, helping to make small business loans more affordable. Several types of SBA loans are available, including options to help business owners with bad credit who struggle to get approved for financing.

Frequently asked questions about business credit cards

Ask the experts: How do business credit cards impact business taxes?

Financial Educator, Debt and Credit

Business credit card transactions that are legitimate business expenses may be written off as a business expense in some cases. A tax preparer may use those transactions as they’re working on your bookkeeping or as a means to prepare your taxes. Interest paid on business credit cards transactions is tax deductible, much like the interest paid on a business loan.

Contributor, Personal Finance

For small business owners — particularly single-member LLCs and S-Corps, business cards are an important tool to help track your transactions and keep them separate from your personal expenses. Using business cards to organize expenses really helps me maximize deductions.

Contributor, Credit Cards

A small business’s margins may be slim, and the right business credit card could potentially help. The rewards you earn with business credit cards aren't taxable, so if you maximize them you can earn substantial cash, points or miles. When you use the card exclusively for business expenses, you can also deduct the fees that are associated with these products.
